Philosophy

In class we are studying philosophy.  It's pretty interesting to learn about the way people approach life.  We are doing some project about philosophy where we analyze a philosopher.  My philosopher is pretty interesting.  It's nice to see the contrast between people's viewpoints and strategies when it comes to approaching life.  My philosopher has several quotes that share his perspective on life and the way he lives.  I'm glad we are learning about philosophy it really sits well with me.  I think it's good that we are learning about something other than literature and analysis of texts and expanding our knowledge to worldly topics.

  1. It may sound a little....slow. But I was finally able to connect Mrs. Elliot's true intentions behind assigning philosophy assignments and Invisible Man/ Native Son.
I am reading Invisible Man, and after doing some research on philosophy I came to the conclusion that in Invisible Man, the ideals of Marxism are included!

  2. I really like philosophy too! My favorite philosophy is nihilism because it makes the most sense to me. The part that really touches me about nihilism is the idea that meaningful aspects of life don't have to be so with a specific mindset. For example, when nihilists argue that we have no proof of our own existence because we have no evidence of any absence of existence, I am stunned by the logic.

  3. Personally I am fascinated by the philosophical approach to literature, as I am interested in philosophy. I think it is amazing how there are so many different beliefs in the world, and we get to learn them all here in America. This completely ties in with one of the goals for the year (of the class) which was to live a life worth living, because it leads us- or at least myself- to thinking about what really is a life worth living and how it may be done. I think it expands our understanding of not only literature but life and people in general.

  4. I agree, philosophy is pretty interesting. Being able to see all the other viewpoints of people other then my own is nice. I enjoy seeing the beliefs of others and comparing them, seeing the history and where it came from is all fun to me. Good post.

  5. I think philosophy is such a broad idea that it can applied to many ideals and aspects of our lives as well as literature. I believe a good book can often change ones personal philosophy and way of life. This kind of ties into the ideas we talked about today in class, the merits of good literature. I think there really is a method to all of Mrs.Elliott's madness.

  6. Studying and understanding philosophy definitely enables us to expand our minds and develop a better understanding of the world and other people. Having a better understanding allows to communicate and work more effectively with diverse groups of people, which in turn can lead to peace and easier living.

  7. Philosophy is such a general and abstract idea that it is difficult to pinpoint its effect on society. Some think that it is a waste of time to delve and consider the meaning of life for years and years, while others think that it helps advance understanding of human nature. I think I lie somewhere along the middle in this subject. Even though I think that it's beneficial to step back and consider what one should do with his or her life, philosophy is sometimes too time consuming and deep to devote one's whole life to this matter. I appreciate all the philosophy we've studied in class, but unlike some of the major philosophers we've studied I don't know if I'd be willing to give up my whole life on a couple of ideas I would have towards how human nature should ideally be.
